A NOTE FROM JAN
Here's something you can use at your table tonight.
It's free. There's nothing to buy at the end of this one.
Every DM knows this moment.
The party ignores the quest hook, walks into a tavern you never planned, and asks the bartender his name.
You say Bob.
Everyone knows you just made up Bob.
I built something for that moment.
DM Tools
Inside the Hall of Heroes there's a set of free tools for DMs.
Find an NPC pulls up a real character a player added to the Hall, with a face and a bit of who they are.
Surprise me does the same thing when you don't care who, you just need someone.
Roll an Encounter builds a scene around them that you can run tonight.
Then it hands you a DM card for you and a player handout you can download and slide across the table.
You can save the ones you like with your own notes, and follow characters you want to see again.
Why the characters are real
Every character in there was made by a real player, and some of them have portraits I painted.
That's the part I like best.
When your party meets a stranger at a crossroads, that stranger was somebody's favorite character first.
They show up with a face and a history nobody had to invent at eleven on a Thursday night.
If you played the Quest, your character is probably in there too, waiting for someone else's game.
Somebody's favorite character, sitting at your table.
How to use it tonight
Open the Hall and go to DM Tools.
Hit Surprise me.
If you like who comes up, roll an encounter and download the handout.
That's it.
If you're not the DM, send this to whoever is.
It's the easiest favor you'll do them all month.
If your table meets someone good tonight, reply to the message that brought you here and tell me who showed up.
I made it because it was fun.
Thanks for being here.
