Your boss in my new game, Unbound

For players, DMs and game designers with a villain or an idea worth fighting. We build their boss fight together, and every boss includes a thigh-up portrait of your character.

Reborn · Paladin

An oathbreaker returned after death, the Dusk Penitent remembers his failure more clearly than his name. He gives the living the mercy he cannot yet offer himself.

You owe me nothing.

Meet the bosses

Each one started as a portrait. Pick one to watch their fight.

“You owe me nothing.”

The Phantom’s Final Movement

What is Unbound?

My new game, played on a grid like your battle map, where every hero and every boss started as one of my portraits.

  • Real characters

Every hero you play or fight is someone’s character from the Hall of Heroes.

  • Tactics on a grid

Walk, flank and step off the marked squares before the hit lands.

  • Bosses that change

Each boss shifts as it weakens, with new moves, a new board and new music.

A lair worthy of a final boss

Their fight gets its own map, and it can change as they weaken.

How a BBEG is born

It starts with your portrait. Then we plan the fight together.

  1. 1Your portrait

A thigh-up portrait of your character, made with my team, with unlimited revisions.

  2. Suri Rose’s chess pieces falling onto the gold squares while her pawns and rook guard her

    2Their moves

We plan how they fight, their phases and their music. Bring your own mechanics if you have them.

  3. A boss stage with fire around its edges

    3Their stage

We design the map they fight on, and how it changes.

  4. A party of heroes fighting a boss on the grid

    4Into Unbound

You get 3 private playtests to perfect their fight. Then every player meets them, and their boss card goes up in the Hall.

Two ways to get your boss

With a new portrait, or one you already have. Every boss gets its own fight, so I keep the spots few.

We plan your boss together, and I work hard to keep your ideas. Unbound will be published, so I have the final say on how the fight plays and how everything looks.

Questions

I’m a DM or a game designer. Is this for me?
Yes. Bring a villain from your campaign, a monster you designed or a mechanic you’ve wanted to see in a real game. If it’s fun to fight, there’s a place for it in Unbound.
How many spots are there?
Eight are left for the Boss Package and five for the Boss Upgrade. Every boss gets its own moves, board and music, so I keep the list short.
How do I get a spot?
Send me a short application with your character and your boss idea. I reply within 24 hours, and if it’s a fit I email you a link to grab your spot.
What’s in the $300?
Their own boss fight in Unbound, with moves, a stage and music we plan together and 3 private playtests to perfect it, their boss card in the Hall of Heroes, and a thigh-up portrait of your character.
I already have a portrait from you. Can they be a boss?
Yes. The Boss Upgrade is $170 and makes the hero in that portrait a boss, boss card included.
When do we plan the fight?
After your portrait is finished. I email you, and we go through their moves, phases, stage and music.
How do the private playtests work?
I design the first version of their fight from your character’s traits and what we talked about. You play it in private and tell me what to change, up to 3 times, until it feels right. Both packages include them.
How much say do I get in the moves?
You suggest the attacks, how they look and what your boss says, and you can bring whole mechanics. Unbound will be published, so I have the final say on how the fight plays and how everything looks. I shape your ideas into a fight that’s fair to play and keep as much of them as I can.
Can my boss be a villain?
Yes. A dark version of your hero, after their story went wrong, makes a great boss. So does the villain your table loves to hate, and I can paint one new for the fight.
Do I need to know how Unbound plays?
No. Tell me about your character the way you’d tell your table, and I turn it into moves. The Suri Rose fight above shows how a boss plays.
When will my boss be in the game?
Unbound is still growing. I add bosses as they’re finished and tell you when yours is in.

Got a boss in mind?

A villain, a monster, a whole new mechanic. Apply for a spot and we build it together.
